I support business leaders
to embrace technology opportunities
Kickstart efficiency through strategic I.T decisions
Do you need a part-time IT director? Want to spend less & achive more with Technology?
I'm David Lane and over the last 23 years, I've managed the IT systems for hundreds of companies IT systems large & small.
The problem I often see, especially in smaller businesses, is a lack of management oversight of technology.
Business owners want to increase profits and cut costs and I.T. has the potential to do exactly that! But often lack a trusted guide or 3rd party independent adviser.
I can help fill that piece of the leadership puzzle with new ideas, explanations and plans to ensure that strategy works for both technical and management teams.
You need someone you can trust to:
Ensure you understand enough to make the right decisions.
WITHOUT information overload & WITHOUT endless meetings & acronyms.
What does it cost to work with me?
The average monthly rate for vCIO is around £500 for a small business and £2000 for a small corporate.
"There are five areas that need to be aligned for fantastic IT: Strategy, Service, Risk, People & Architecture."

You need to get more out of the system you already own?
You've got multiple tools, maybe that don't work together?
Lots of weird I.T. issues?
Need automated systems to free up costly man hours?
You know your IT is in the dark ages but don’t
want to waste money on I.T.
IT is a silo, it's not really a business driver
& a function of the business?
Maybe you tried to do it all yourself, paid for projects that don’t work properly & you get frustrated with technology, or you're a little bit intimidated, possibly by the technical decisions because you're not really sure what you should be doing.
You need to cut your I.T. costs.
You're not really sure if I.T. is good value.
You're not sure why we spend so much time on I.T. issues.
Wasting time on constant issues with printing, computers, emails, and everything. Do you really need to get involved with these?
You’re not really sure about the I.T. decisions that are being made, and that I.T. seems really complicated. There are lots of acronyms that you're not sure what they mean.
Maybe cybersecurity is something that you've heard of but don't really think it's something you need to do anything about. So you're not sure how to cut your I.T. expenditure.
You may be in startup phase & need an experienced team leader
Need automated systems to free up costly man hours?
You don’t want to waste money on I.T.
I.T. is a mess & you just buy laptops from PC world
Businesses growing fast need a different kind of I.T. strategy. You need to plan to scale rapidly and not waste money on ineffective systems that are poorly implemented.
I didn't know that CyberCrime is by far the biggest threat to my business
Not really sure if I.T. is good value or I'm overpaying
Spend a lot of time arguing about I.T. service delivery and worried a consultant will make things worse?
Tried Expensive Consultants? Spending a lot of money on a consultant or software to fix everything immediately and then nothing happens!
Maybe cybersecurity is something that you've heard of but don't really think it's something you need to do anything about.
Cut Costs
If your I.T. is underperforming, you're leaving a huge amount of money on the table.
A Fractional Chief Information Officer or vCIO can quickly deliver savings at a small fraction of the cost of a full time team member
Better technology is by far the cheapest way to reduce business costs.
If you're not managing the cybersecurity risk, your I.T. team is underperforming. Well, you're just not making great I.T. decisions.
An experienced pair of hands can really help. With my 20+ years of experience in managing I.T. systems for small businesses and running my own business, I'm very well placed to help small and medium-sized businesses to really use I.T. as effectively and cost-efficient as possible."
Reduce Workload
Are you overwhelmed by I.T?
Do you find yourself entangled in the complexities of technology, unsure of how to proceed.
I understand that I.T. can be daunting, and as a small business owner, you simply don't have the time or interest to sort it all out. But here's the thing: I.T. is not just a nuisance; it's holding back your business's potential.
That's where I come in. I will unravel those I.T. complexities, providing clarity and empowering you to make informed decisions.
Together, we will identify the key issues, prioritize them and solve them one by one. Trust me to guide you towards effective solutions, freeing you from the burden of subpar I.T. It's time to break free and let your business thrive without the hindrance of inadequate technology.
Not a source of frustration
Empower your team to do the same
No need to spend spend spend! Instead, assign a sensible budget
The vCIO strategic I.T. service, I offer is an inexpensive way to acquire a specialist skill set. It's a fixed cost and it should pay for itself immediately. As a fractional member of your leadership team, you will get all the knowledge and skills of my technical, management and leadership experience, without employing a full time I.T. director/CIO/CTO, which is hard to find and expensive!
I want to find the first three things that we can do very cheaply (or free) that will pay for the time back immediately.
We want to:
Review technology relationships
Improve communication
We obviously don't want to alienate or annoy your I.T. team, who often know the answers but can't always articulate them in a way that makes sense to you.
Create a strategic roadmap to augment your business strategy with immediate action items.
While I love ideas, I will hold you and your team accountable to getting things finished!
As I mentioned, we want to pick those three things we can do right away, that are going to make a big change. And we want to have a plan, a financial roadmap
to manage costs over the next 36 months.
So we've got strategy and we know we can articulate to everyone.
Don't waste time with salespeople, techies or pretty charts & reports.
Instead have an expert guide you with the decisions you actually need to make!
I work with your team and get a great understanding of the business strengths and weaknesses
With our working plan (in plain English) with the budgets, risks and opportunities clearly identified & our top 3 DO IT NOW items you will get done right away
You understand the plan. I will support you to execute and update the plan
I.T. is always rapidly changing and so we will speak regularly to ensure your I.T. plan still makes sense
How much does it cost?
I’m passionate about helping businesses & sharing my knowledge and skills, but obviously need to support my family! I love working with great leaders & also family businesses where I can make a big difference.
I try and keep my rates fair for all businesses so we can have a fantastic long relationship.
I charge a fixed low quarterly fee depending on your current business size and growth plans.
Expensive Consultants?
There is little point spending a lot of money on a consultant who says they can fix everything immediately and then you get a pretty plan and nothing happens!
So lets not do that! Instead let’s work together to make your business brilliant!
Rates example:
A very small accountancy firm may pay just £100 a month for a few hours a year of strategic support.
The average rate is around £500 a month for a small business and £2000 for a small corporate.
You will also get access to our private forum, training and documentation and “instant” chat with me for strategic support.
*This doesn’t include expenses or non-strategic tasks
If this still doesn’t sound ridiculously good value
You can join the vCIO forum for a £54 monthly membership fee, but you won’t get me nagging you to make sure things get over the line or access to me on voice chat.
An Education Institution needed help to align the business needs with the I.T. budget.
Worked with the new head of I.T. to ensure:
Previous lack of oversight of I.T. did not lead to boom-and-bust cyclic IT spending. Getting the basics right can lead to management thinking I.T. is "done" and off the agenda.
Tried to make sure that the leadership team had a clear link between I.T. spend and growth plans over the next 36 months by aligning the I.T. plan to the business plan.
Showed the benefits and disbenefits of different areas of spending so the management team could quickly make good decisions.

Working with a business owner who had acquired a business with dire I.T.
Trying to fix I.T. can seem like opening an endless chequebook, often people just close the door and try and ignore it.
My role is simply to prioritize the spending to get the biggest "bang for your buck" and make sure that the risks to the business are understood and can be mitigated.
A MSP had one major client who had major issues with old technology.
I was able to explain to the customer in a fresh way why they were having some of these issues, help them understand the risks and benefits of their decisions, and create and implement a project management plan for system refreshes.
The customer was unaware of the big issues their staff were having with obsolete equipment, and some of the staff thought that it was normal for I.T. to be this slow, as they were so used to terrible performance from their I.T.
It took time to explain to the non-technical leadership that improved performance and reduced service desk requests would pay for itself many times over in the medium term.
What we need to do
How we're going to do it
and most importantly
Why!
I.T. is important to understand the vCIO is independent role. I’m completely independent from your current I.T. provider & your in-house team. It's not a sales opportunity for me to sell stuff. I'm very clear about this. The whole point is that we come in and offer you business value. To transform the way you see I.T.
It's about having a trusted advisor that you can have that you can bring in that will really, really help
drive the business forward by using I.T. effectively.
If that sounds like you,
Book a call with me.
I would Love to have a chat with you more and see if I can help make your business more successful.
Cut your costs and make I.T. less stressful.
Speak soon. Dave
